TL;DR

Short version: Canva is a design suite for almost anything: slides, social posts, videos, flyers. For maps, it gives you map templates you edit by hand, with arrows, lines, pins, labels and coloured areas. To make a map move, you use its general animation tools, such as a motion path you draw by dragging an element, or a third-party app from its Apps Marketplace. Animaps does one job: animated map videos. You type a sentence or build steps, and it finds the places, draws borders, fills countries, follows real roads and sea lanes, and moves the camera. If a map is one slide in a bigger design, or you already pay for Canva, stay in Canva. If the map is the video, Animaps saves the manual work.

What Each Tool Is For

Canva is a design tool used for slides, social posts, videos and print. Its map maker page says you can "Design stunning custom maps with ease" and add them "to infographics, documents, presentations, and even websites." You start from map templates, then add "arrows and lines," text, coloured areas, clipart and pin markers. The result is a designed map, close to an infographic.

To animate it, Canva has general animation tools. Its help center explains how to apply an animation to a page, an element or a text box, with speed presets and intro and outro timing. Its motion path page says: "Simply drag an element to mark its motion path, and it will move along the path you created." You can orient the element to the path and change its speed. Its Apps Marketplace also lists a third-party app called "Map video," by Artyde, which says it can "Generate dynamic map animations showing routes between countries."

Animaps is a studio built for map animation. It knows real places: countries, regions, cities, rivers, mountains and historical states, with their real shapes. You describe a sequence and it returns steps, or you add steps by hand. A step can fly the camera to a place, orbit it, trace a border, fill a country with a colour or its flag, draw a route, or show a label. Road routes follow real roads, sea routes avoid land, and a 3D vehicle model rides the route when one exists.

A prompt you can paste into Animaps:

Start on a globe, fly to South America, fill Peru with its flag, then draw a road route from Lima to Cusco and label both cities.

In Canva, the same video means a map template, a line for the road you draw yourself, a car graphic on a motion path, and labels timed by hand.

In Animaps, a flag fill is one click in the Land style presets.

Where Canva Is Better

It does everything else. Your map can sit inside a slide deck, a carousel, a YouTube thumbnail or a print flyer, in one tool.

Templates and stock. Its pricing page lists 1.6M+ templates on the free plan, and millions of photos, videos, graphics and audio.

Teams. Collaboration tools, brand kits and approvals on the Business plan.

Free and familiar. Many teams already pay for Canva, and many people already know it.

Static maps. For a clean map on a flyer or an infographic, a Canva template is often all you need.

Where Animaps Is Better

Real geography. You type "Kenya" and get Kenya's real border. You do not draw it, trace it or find a clean image of it.

Routes that follow the ground. Road routes follow real roads. Sea routes go around coasts. In Canva, you draw the path yourself, and it does not know where the roads are.

Camera moves on a real map. Fly-to, zoom, orbit, tilt and turn on a flat map or a 3D globe, with 3D terrain on Pro. In Canva, you move flat graphics.

Borders and history. Trace or pulse a border, fill land with a flag, and play a border timelapse for a historical empire.

One project, three shapes. Export 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1 as MP4 or GIF, at 30 or 60 FPS.

Time. A five-step map video in Animaps is a sentence and a few edits. In Canva, each moving part is placed and timed by hand.

Pricing

Canva has a free plan. Its pricing page lists Pro for one person and Business per person, with yearly billing that saves money. Prices change by country, so check its pricing page.

What Animaps Does Not Do

Be clear on the limits before you switch.

Who Should Choose Which

Choose Canva if

The map is one part of a bigger design. A slide, a post, a flyer.

You need a static map. A template with pins and labels is enough.

Your team already works in Canva. Brand kits and shared work matter more than map motion.

Choose Animaps if

The map is the video. A route, a border, a country reveal, a historical change.

You want real places and real routes. No hand-drawn borders or paths.

You make map clips often. YouTube explainers, Shorts, travel teasers, lessons.

FAQ

Can Canva animate a map? Yes, with its general tools. You can animate a map template's elements, or drag an element along a motion path you draw. A third-party app in its marketplace, "Map video," also makes route animations between countries.

Does Canva draw routes on real roads? Its map maker and motion path pages do not describe road routing. You draw the path yourself.

Can I use an Animaps video in Canva? Yes. Export MP4 from Animaps and add it to any Canva design that takes video.

Is Animaps a Canva alternative? Only for map videos. For slides, posts and print, Canva does far more.

The Bottom Line

Canva is the better pick when the map is one part of a design, or when a static map is enough. It does much more than maps.

Animaps is the better pick when the map is the video: real borders, real routes, camera moves and history, from a sentence or a few steps. To read more about map motion, see map motion graphics.
